| Colonization
in Governador Celso Ramos dates back more than 200 years,
to when Portuguese settlers began arriving to work in
the whaling industry. Nowadays the region specializes
in molluscs and is one of the largest producers of cultured
mussels in Brazil and an important fishing area. The same
Azorean settlers who founded the neighbouring settlement
of São Miguel also began to people Governador Celso
Ramos, which was part of the district of Biguaçu
up until 1963. Churches were always used as the communities´
meeting places and, in addition to their religious uses,
the settlers would hold meetings there to discuss subjects
such as how best to defend themselves from the natives.
Since the necessary conditions for development were not
available at Armação da Piedade, the founders
moved to Ganchos, which is where the municipal centre
remains today. With beautiful beaches, bays, peninsulas
and nature reserves, Governador Celso Ramos has been privileged
in terms of its natural riches. |
